PROFESSIONAL BOOK COVER DESIGN

This creative layout was done entirely in Photoshop for a Web graphic UI navigational graphic with rollovers, but the creative style could also be recreated as a great book cover artistic design for digital desktop publishing — click on the cover image above to go to the actual sliced User Interface in action.

While Photoshop vector capabilities can produce vector-based text, Gary Ballard would probably place the pixel-based image in Illustrator or InDesign and setup the type there (outside of Photoshop) if the book-cover art was going to printing press.

These academic books were trimmed to 8.5x11 inches, and were between 100-275 pages per book — Gary Ballard used Photoshop® to optimize the photos, InDesign® to lay out the book, Illustrator® to work on the logos, Microsoft® Word® and Excel® for the text and giant data spreadsheets, and finally Acrobat® to export the production PDFs for the off-set commercial printer.

The Whaley House in Old Town, is a historical landmark in San Diego; Nate Harrison is a popular black San Diego pioneer who lived in a cabin on Palomar Mountain.

These are fascinating books about early San Diego history in Southern California.
