One-Man Band
by Gary G. Ballard His bright red hair has thinned and faded, and his audiences have gotten smaller, but the magic still beams from his eyes. Stillman "Red" Bristol, Red Bristol, has delighted people with his one-man musical shows for over 73 years. Red says he has enjoyed his world travels, singing and playing the old-time favorites he dearly loves. Highlights of Red's career include gigs on The Jackie Gleason Show, The Ed Sullivan Show and Hee Haw. Born in Cortland, New York, 1899, Red received his first musical instrument, a banjo, on his 10th birthday. One year later Red was performing his own solo act on vaudeville; dressed in a Buster Brown-type suit, he played the banjo and sang Stephen Foster songs.... Story and Photo by G. Ballard, San Diego |
