COMMERCIAL PRODUCT PHOTOGRAPHY

This custom handmade Native American Indian gourd rattle — black, with Indian beadwork and leather handle accents — was given to me by an Indian elder who has always supported Native American Artists by buying their art items in bulk and spreading the items around his community by gifting them away to his friends, family and tribal members, personal and professional acquaintances.

I liked this particular black fancy show rattle so much I set up my studio tabletop and Norman lighting, softbox, and reflectors and took this photo of it in 2010 — the Native American gourd artist is Karen Nelson (Sioux Indian) and she resides on the La Jolla Indian Reservation in San Diego County.

Having done my share of professional product photography in Southern California — in the studio and on location in natural lighting and studio lighting — I think a lot of artists and resellers make a classic marketing mistake by trying to do their own product photography, company branding and marketing materials.

A professional presentation is a whole lot more interesting for most people to get excited about buying into.
